Tulsa County VIP

At a recent Tulsa County VIP offender program, there was a DUI offender whose outlook on life and his DUI charge changed dramatically.  This particular attendee drove from out of town to the Tulsa VIP program because it was the last chance he could take it before going back to court. His drive to Tulsa was filled with anger and upset for having to attend this panel. His BAC had “only been an .08” and he was convinced that he shouldn’t have received the DUI to begin with.  He made his way into the auditorium at Tulsa University with a huge chip on his shoulder.  He slumped down in his seat determined to “sleep” during the program.  Fortunately for him (although he didn’t think so at the time), the first speaker got his full attention.  The second speaker did the same.  But the last speaker, who had voluntarily driven to Tulsa from out of town to be on the panel, had a story that hit home and went straight to his heart.  As tears welled up in his eyes, he suddenly began to see just how much of an impact this program had made on him.  He would never be the same.  He ended up thanking the judge for ordering him to go, and he quit fighting his charges.  He realized that he had “no right” to drive after even one drink; “no right to take another person’s life into his own hands.”  The offender not only left Tulsa that night a changed man, he has gone back to Tulsa many times to speak on that same panel that he so desperately wanted to avoid hearing.
